Camp01 inspiration

Generosity and dignity are the greatest gifts we give ourselves - this is the realization of our founder, Shaima Alzarooni, during her many years in providing humanitarian aid and it is the inspiration for the founding of Camp01.

When our founder visited a family of Palestinian refugees in Jordan during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan;  as she was leaving, the call to prayer sounded, indicating that it was time to break the fast by eating Iftar.  Iftar is the meal eaten by Muslims right after sunset during Ramadan.  The daughter, a young girl of nine years, grabbed Shaima’s hand in the doorway and invited her to share with her her Iftar meal. The little girl knew that Shaima was traveling and it would be sometime before she would be able to break her fast.  For this little girl and her refugee family, having so little and sharing it, something so dear, showed her and her familys’ generosity in sharing what little they had with someone they had just met and it showed their dignity at a time of severe strife.  It was a life changing moment for our founder.  It demonstrated to her that we can always rise above our circumstances with generosity, positivity, grace and dignity.
